The Official Opening of Our Renovated Track at Shamrock Hill, Dunleer took place on Wednesday June 30th with special guest Catherina Mc Kiernan, previous winner of Ras na hEireann (1998 and 2005), former European Cross Country Champion and 4 timesilver medallist at the World Cross Country Championships.
The track stands on the grounds of Lann Leire GFC and GAA representatives were on hand to congratulate Dunleer AC on providing this great facility. The Club is very grateful to the Department of Sport and Recreation for providing grant assistance for the project, but still needs to raise some funds for the shortfall and will be embarking on more fundraising activities very soon.
Catherina spoke highly of the Club also and was delighted to present specialised running shoes on behalf of Dunleer AC to 2 young junior men Carl Dunne and Shane Walsh, both representing Ireland this month in International Mountain Running Events.
Club Chairman Kevin Matthews was delighted to see an array of friends and supporters, young and old from many eras represented at the opening, with Barney Mc Guill representing the Mc Guill family. The Clubrooms are aptly named the Noel Mc Guill Clubrooms to honour former athlete Noel Mc Guill, brother of Barney and Larry who died tragically in a cycling accident many years ago.
Many of the newer young members were present with their families and all enjoyed the refreshments kindly sponsored by the Victory family from Dunleer. Also present was Bill Hoey whose father William was a former Chairman of Dunleer AC., masters' athlete Tom Hickey who ran many marathons and used the track for his training, Mark Stephenson North Leinster Schools' Secretary and Ciarán Doyle Louth Athletics Secretary, as well as a host of supporters, committee members plus junior and senior athletes. The photos in the Clubrooms were regarded with great interest as old heroes and new are displayed in the Dunleer AC photo exhibition.
The Club committee and especially Declan Mc Kenna, Jacqueline Matthews and Eugene Burns were thanked for their part in getting the track project completed, and also Larry Mc Guill and the late Louis Duffin who helped secure the grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation. Special words of thanks were expressed to Olivia Kierans and her Golf Classic team who raised the bulk of the money required for the track project.
Ireland's First Mobile Heart Screening Unit was also in operation at the Clubrooms on that day screening young people who had helped out with the 7 marathons in 7 days awareness raising campaign for SADS in 2006. Many thanks to the cardiologist and nurses present as well as Mary Vasseghi, who is no stranger to Dunleer. Mary has presented the facts on the incidence of SADS in young people many times and works tirelessly to campaign for better heart health care for young people in Ireland.
